Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 14, 2026
1. Introduction
Learnforest LLC (“Learnforest,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates Speakli (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information about you when you use the Service. By using the Service, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
2. Information We Collect
Information you provide directly
- Account information: your email address when you register.
- Profile information: display name, target grade level, learning goals, and other profile details you choose to provide.
- Child and parental-consent information: whether a learner indicates they are under 16, a parent or guardian’s name and contact information, consent records, parent-child account links, and privacy preferences.
- Conversation audio: microphone input captured during AI-guided speaking sessions and sent to our servers for transcription, AI processing, and feedback generation.
- Learning and conversation records: transcripts, AI responses, assessments, progress records, speaking plans, educational skill and interest profiles inferred from practice activity, and feedback you choose to submit.
- Current practice video (stays on your device): in the current version of Speakli, if you enable your camera, practice video is recorded and stored only on your own device, in your browser’s local storage, and is not uploaded to our servers. Earlier versions of Speakli uploaded some session video; that legacy data is subject to the 30-day retention rule described in Section 7.
- Payment information: billing details processed by Stripe (we do not store payment card numbers directly).
Information collected automatically
- Usage data: pages visited, features used, session duration, and interaction events.
- Device information: browser type, operating system, and general device characteristics.
- Log data: IP address, access times, and referring URLs.
- Cookies and similar technologies: we use session cookies to maintain your authenticated state. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, operate, and improve the Service, including generating AI conversation responses and speech feedback assessments.
- Process your conversations through AI services (including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic) to deliver real-time coaching and post-session feedback.
- Personalize your learning experience based on your progress, goals, and skill level.
- Record and manage parental consent and parent-child account access.
- Process payments and manage your subscription.
- Send transactional emails, such as sign-in codes and subscription receipts.
- Analyze usage patterns to improve our features and content.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information with:
- AI and language-model providers: conversation transcripts and related text are processed by AI providers to generate coaching responses and speech feedback assessments. Our default provider is OpenAI; we also use Google (Gemini) and Anthropic. Each provider processes this data in accordance with its own terms.
- Real-time voice infrastructure: live speaking sessions are carried over LiveKit, which transports your conversation audio between your device and our AI agent during a session.
- Speech-to-text providers: Deepgram and the Google Cloud Speech-to-Text API transcribe your spoken audio into text during and after sessions.
- Text-to-speech providers: ElevenLabs and Cartesia generate the AI agent’s spoken voice.
- Avatar providers: LemonSlice receives the AI agent’s output and session media needed to render an interactive avatar. It does not receive practice video from your camera.
- Payment processors: Stripe handles payment card processing. We share only the information necessary to complete transactions.
- Analytics providers: we use Google Analytics to understand how users interact with the Service. Analytics data is pseudonymous.
- Email delivery: Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES) delivers transactional email such as sign-in codes, parental-consent requests, and subscription receipts.
- Schools and organizations: if you access Speakli through a school or organization account, your usage data and assessment results may be shared with authorized instructors or administrators at that organization.
- Parents and guardians: for accounts belonging to minors, authenticated parents and guardians with an active verified link may access their child’s profile, progress, conversation history, assessments, speaking plans, and privacy preferences.
- Legal requirements: we may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect rights, property, or safety.
5. AI Model Training and Improvement
We send conversation content to the service providers listed above to generate responses, transcriptions, voices, and feedback. Learnforest’s policy is not to opt in, direct, or authorize those providers to use conversation content to train their general-purpose AI models. Providers may retain or review data for service operation, security, and abuse prevention under their applicable terms and any applicable agreements with us.
Speakli may use conversation transcripts, prompts, and AI outputs associated with feedback you submit to evaluate and improve our AI features, including to create evaluation or fine-tuning datasets. We do not use practice video for this purpose. You or a parent or guardian may ask us to exclude or delete identifiable feedback-linked content by contacting support@speakli.app.
6. Children’s Privacy (COPPA)
We take children’s privacy seriously. Speakli requires parental consent when a learner indicates they are under 16 before that learner may use the Service. This broader protected-minor rule includes the verifiable parental consent required by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for children under 13.
For child accounts, we limit collection to the purposes described in this Policy. We do not use children’s personal information for advertising purposes, and we do not share it with third parties except as described in Section 4 above. An authenticated parent or guardian with an active verified link can view the child’s profile, progress, conversation history, assessments, speaking plans, and privacy preferences in the parent portal. A verified parent or guardian may request a copy of the other personal information we hold about the child, including transcripts, ask us to correct or delete it, or revoke consent by contacting us at support@speakli.app.
If you are a school or organization enrolling students under 13, your agreement to our Terms of Service serves as parental consent on behalf of those students’ parents and guardians, consistent with COPPA’s school consent exception.
7. Data Retention
Account and profile information is retained while the account is active. The parent portal’s child-account deletion control deactivates and archives the account; it does not itself erase the child’s information, and the archive currently has no fixed automatic erasure date. Contact us to make a verified erasure request. We respond to verified requests within 30 days.
During a speaking session, your conversation audio is streamed in real time for transcription and AI processing, and is also captured and stored on our servers so that we can generate your feedback assessment and let you review your session. We apply a 30-day retention rule to stored conversation audio. When audio reaches 30 days, scheduled database deletion and storage lifecycle deletion begin automatically; because those systems run on a schedule and process deletions asynchronously, final removal may occur after day 30 when the next deletion cycle completes. You may also contact us to make a verified erasure request. Transcripts and feedback reports are retained in your account history until a deletion request is completed, but may be deleted sooner under child-data minimization schedules. Some feedback and evaluation artifacts follow the separate retention rule below; contact us to request deletion of those artifacts.
In the current version of Speakli, camera practice video is recorded and stored only on your own device, in your browser’s local storage, so you can review your practice. Current practice video is not uploaded to our servers, stays under your control, and can be removed by deleting the recording or clearing your browser’s storage.
Earlier versions of Speakli uploaded some session video to our servers. Legacy server-side conversation video is subject to the same 30-day retention rule and is scheduled for automatic deletion. As with audio, final removal may occur after day 30 when the next asynchronous storage lifecycle cycle completes. You or a verified parent or guardian may also request deletion of identifiable legacy session video by contacting support@speakli.app.
- Analytics: Google Analytics event and user-level data is configured for a 14-month retention period.
- AI evaluation artifacts: artifacts that are not linked to submitted feedback are eligible for routine deletion after 90 days. Feedback and the AI artifacts linked to it currently may be retained indefinitely for ongoing evaluation and improvement unless deletion is requested.
- COPPA consent records: retained for at least three years after a child account is deleted so we can document consent and compliance, and then eligible for deletion.
- Operational logs and instrumentation: currently have no single fixed retention period and are kept as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Service.
- Billing, security, and legal records: retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for accounting, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or legal obligations.
8. Advertising and Profiling
Speakli does not display third-party advertising. We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted or cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles from child information. We create an educational learning profile from a learner’s goals, topics, progress, and skill level only to personalize practice and recommendations. We also use pseudonymous product analytics to understand feature usage. These uses are not used to make decisions about eligibility, credit, employment, or similar matters.
9. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and secure cloud infrastructure. Our services are primarily hosted on Google Cloud Platform, and we also use Amazon Web Services (AWS) for certain functions such as transactional email. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights to:
- Access: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction: request correction of inaccurate personal information.
- Deletion: request deletion of your personal information (subject to legal retention requirements).
- Data portability: request your data in a portable format.
- Opt-out: opt out of browser analytics tracking. Speakli honours a first-party opt-out preference stored in your browser, as well as your browser’s Do Not Track setting and extensions that block Google Analytics. Browser analytics is disabled for a protected minor unless a parent enables it and is also disabled while parental consent is pending.
To exercise these rights, please contact us at support@speakli.app. We will respond to verified requests within 30 days.
11. Cookies
We use session cookies that are necessary for authentication and to keep you signed in. When analytics is enabled, Google Analytics may use identifiers stored in your browser to measure use of the Service. We disable Google advertising signals and do not use advertising cookies. Your parental-consent status is stored securely on our servers, not in a cookie. You can opt out of analytics as described above. Disabling necessary cookies in your browser will prevent you from using the Service.
12. Third-Party Links
The Service may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting a notice within the Service or by sending an email to your registered address. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Policy.
